  1. In 1989 a sex researcher named Ray Blanchard published a controversial, provocative, politically incorrect theory claiming that transgender women are not, as custom has it, essentially female souls accidentally born in male bodies. Instead, he claimed, they are men of two types: gay men who love straight men, and straight men who love themselves. For the latter condition, Blanchard coined the term “autogynephilia,” new Greek for love of oneself as a woman.
