Re-Read The Masters You were in high school when you read The Great Gatsby for the first time. You were just a kid when you read The Count of Monte Cristo or had someone tell you the story of Odysseus. The point is: You got it right? You read them. You’re done, right? Nope. We cannot be content to simply pick up a book once and judge it by that experience. It’s why we have to read and re-read.View all 5 sources
The writing I love the most places you into that story, that room, that rain soaked kiss. You can smell the air, hear the sounds, and feel your heart race as the character’s does. It’s something F. Scott Fitzgerald did so well, to describe a scene so gorgeously interwoven with rich emotional revelations, that you yourself have escaped from your own life for a moment.View all 2 sources
Remember in high school, when you had to read "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott SparkNotes? The character Jay Gatsby doesn't even like opulent mansion parties, but he throws them anyway just to show his crush, Daisy, that he's made it, that he's a success, that he's worth something. And as we all remember, in the end, they get married and defeat the monster Grendel to save the hall of Hrothgar. At least, that's what I wrote in my 10th grade English essay about how the theme of "The Great Gatsby" is money always leads to happiness. I got a D minus!View source
This book was on Sam Altman's bookshelf.
View sourceThe author does a good job of verbally sugar-coating an otherwise boring story about an obsessed bootlegger and his unstable acquaintances. A book perfectly suited to teach helpless K-12 children to value prose over content and that unfaithfulness and obsession lead to despair and death. 2/5View source
Melinda and I really like [this book]. When we were first dating, she had a green light that she would turn on when her office was empty and it made sense for me to come over.View source
