  8. Ficciones is a is a collection of short stories by Jorge Luis Borges, who I discovered in college decades ago and is still my favorite literary sci-fi author of all time. He's a very unique character. Borges is definitely worth reading if you like highly dense science fiction-ish stories with lots of literary allusions and poetry and all kinds of clever prose weaved in. My favorite story of his is probably The Library of Babel, which is a classic. If you haven't read that and you like sci-fi, I highly recommend it. It's one of my two favorite short stories of all time, the other one is Understand by Ted Chiang who is also a genius.
