I was thinking a lot about power and purity when we wrote the lyrics for Bread. I had just read “The Purity Myth” by Jessica Valenti and I was experimenting with my glutenfreeness and somehow the word Bread encapsulated so many of the themes I was dancing around… Desire. Energy. Shame. Religion. Pão… de Açucar. Money. Abundance. Scarcity. Family. Sensuality. Does bread mean literally everything??

It's based on a book by Jessica Valenti called "The Purity Myth" and the whole premise of the book is this idea of Purity is so harmful and hurtful to women, actually to all of us. And it's completely archaic and it's actually completely made up and it's just a myth. And like the whole idea even of the white dress and of breaking your hyman and of being, like you know, basically higher valued the more pure you are, ie the less pleasure you've experienced. Like why are we, why are we doing that to us? We're being like "you are going to have a higher value in our society the less pleasure you have" like it's just a form of controlling women.
